Nell Jessup Newton to continue as interim provost into 2026-27 academic year
Dear Wake Forest community,
I am pleased to share that Dr. Nell Jessup Newton has agreed to continue serving as interim provost through the presidential transition and the 2026-27 academic year, as needed. This extension ensures continuity and stability in our academic leadership during this period of transition. The University’s next president will have the opportunity to partner with Interim Provost Newton in advancing priorities while planning next steps in regards to appointing a permanent provost.
Since assuming the role on August 1, Interim Provost Newton has provided thoughtful and steady leadership to the Provost’s Office and across the University. She has worked closely with our academic deans to support their priorities, helped sustain the strong momentum of our academic enterprise, and has served as a valued and engaged member of the Executive Leadership Team. Her collaborative approach and depth of experience have been instrumental in advancing key initiatives and supporting our students’ continued success.
Over the past year, Interim Provost Newton’s knowledge of Wake Forest and appreciation for its distinctive mission have only deepened since her earlier service as interim dean of the School of Law during the 2022-2023 academic year. Her willingness to continue as interim provost reflects a genuine commitment to the relationships she has fostered across campus and a strong alignment with Wake Forest’s values. Her steady leadership and collaborative spirit continue to define her service as interim provost.
I am grateful to Dr. Newton for her continued willingness to serve Wake Forest in the important capacity of interim provost. Her leadership will remain essential as we move forward in the transition for the University’s next president.
Please join me in thanking Dr. Newton for her ongoing service and commitment to Wake Forest.
Sincerely,
Susan R. Wente, Ph.D.
President
